Vuelta a España comments [newest on top]

Koronin [Koronin] Friday 20.Sep 04:32, 2019
A couple things to note about Movistar and la Vuelta. Valverde did not believe he could actually win it, and he even said he didn't dare let himself even dream of an overall final podium. Yet when he got that podium he was extremely emotional because of how much it meant to him to be there in rainbow jersey not to mention all the records he achieved by gaining that podium. (Yes podiums do actually mean a great deal to him.) I also do not believe that the break on the wind/flat stage gets 5 minutes if Valverde and/or Lopez is in that group. Same as in the Tour where when Quintana was in the break no one cared if they had a 5 minute lead, but the one break Valverde did manage to get himself into was never allowed more than about 1 and a half minutes. Valverde in the final stages of the Tour and down by around 5 or so minutes to the GC group was a much bigger risk than Quintana on several stages. In most of the mountain stages Quintana wasn't really good enough to be of any help to Valverde and not only was he not good enough he almost cost Valverde the 2nd spot on the podium on stage 20. Movistar's radios went out due to the rain and they didn't know the time gaps. The fans started yelling to Valverde he was close to losing the podium due to the time Pogacar had. Valverde has said that is when he had to start racing that stage for himself and not worry anymore about Quintana. Which for me is rediculous that he was worrying about Quintana in the first place. Quintana should have been there to help Valverde who was climbing better from the start. Then of course we have the stage that Quintana wanted Soler called back when Soler had a chance to try to win the stage.

Marek_c [Passionforbiking] Thursday 19.Sep 11:29, 2019
Don't think Movistar had any clear plan that day. They must have been insane to plan gaining 8 minutes by a top 10 rider on a flat stage. Movistar only wins stages and races thanks to a huge talent of an individual, then they call it a plan and take credit for it. It is not fair.
Every break has an initial stage, and I'm pretty sure with Valverde or Lopez in this group they would never exceed a minute gap.
Now, we only talk of that one crazy stage. What about all other stages where Quintana ran his "one man show"?

Andy [Luxembourg Finest] Wednesday 18.Sep 15:18, 2019

The speed in the break would not have been lower that day with Valverde and can't see how Jumbo with the help of maybe Astana and UAE could have managed to get it back. Movistar had a plan that day. Yes, they failed to get it all correct, but Quintana could have been really close to win the Vuelta that day.

Marek_c [Passionforbiking] Wednesday 18.Sep 14:31, 2019
The fact they let Quintana go, says a lot about how he is riding. I don't think it would happen with Lopez or Valverde in this break. When a domestique with top 10 placement goes in a break and takes half of the team with him, there is a reason to question the team goals. Not to mention the risk the put on their actual leader.

Andy [Luxembourg Finest] Wednesday 18.Sep 09:49, 2019
28th FC-manager last 6 weeks
What should Quintana have done? He got in the big breakaway, but Valverde did not because he was on the wrong side of the road that day.

Marek_c [Passionforbiking] Wednesday 18.Sep 09:21, 2019
I dissagree on the Quintana thing :) Yes, it makes races interesting for an average TV-audience, but is such a waste of talents and potential in the team. Movistar won team competition again, but let's be honest: they just LOST another big race. 2nd place is the first among loosers. If Quintana cooperated with Valverde instead of riding like a rookie, they would have probably beat Roglic. There is one significant advantage of ridding the "Ineos-way" - they WIN :))

Koronin [Koronin] Sunday 15.Sep 22:18, 2019
Congratulations to Roglic, Valverde, Pogacar and the rest of the different winners through the race. What a final podium with those 3 riders. A perfect way for Valverde to end his season in the rainbow stripes. Movistar became the 2nd team ever to win the team classification in all 3 Grand Tours (last time that was done was 1974). When Valverde first stood on the podium at la Vuelta Pogacar was 4 years old.

Koronin [Koronin] Sunday 15.Sep 01:16, 2019
What an amazing performance by Pogacar to gain the podium.
For me the top 3 in this Vuelta have been the strongest and most consistent throughout the entire Vuelta.
Valverde puts his name in the record books with the most ever Vuelta podiums with 7, most years between first and most recent (or last) Grand Tour podium at 16 years, most all-time Grand Tour top 10's at 19, and ties indurain for most ever Grand Tour podiums by a Spaniard with 9. I do wonder if this is also the largest age difference between two podium finishes in a Grand Tour at 18 and a half years.
Congratulations to Roglic, Valverde and Pogacar.

I gotta say ... thank god theres other ways todo GT's than the Ineos way... you know, like Movistar ... or a rider like CFH who had a lucky break ending up among the top 10 fighters, and later proves his place there brilliantly... or Quintanas stamina... this is what makes this sport so damn charming 😁

Koronin [Koronin] Friday 13.Sep 20:58, 2019
It appears the UCI has changed rules without telling anyone. Since when were you required to wait when there is a crash? Also since when on a uphill finish did they not give time gaps?

As i learned to know Quintana, i've notice a couple of things over the years... his absolute top climbing level is among the best in the world... and he showes it 1 or 2 times every GT i does .... Even though he's always top 10, his Weakness is concistecy ... thats where his fun " deceitful " ways comes in play ... he always seems to find a way, and never gives up ... you gotta appreciate that 🤣 .... unless you think it's on your beloved Valverdes expences though .... which you obviously do ..

Koronin [Koronin] Friday 13.Sep 01:53, 2019
So it appears that Quintana has gotten better in crosswinds at the expense of his climbing?

Koronin [Koronin] Thursday 12.Sep 18:32, 2019
I see Lopez more in the mold of Contador in trying different things and long range attacks.

johnjackjoe [JohnJackJoe Racing] Thursday 12.Sep 11:08, 2019
This was an tactically amazing race by Movistar. I can't see how Quintana can be called selfish when Movistar nearly managed to topple Roglic yesterday after everyone said the race is done. If Astana would have not been this could have been an amazing upset.

Assassin [Troy The Trader] Thursday 12.Sep 10:42, 2019
24th FC-manager overall - 14th FC-manager last 6 weeks
Have to agree with you there goon. Whilst you can see Quintana as selfish from one perspective, from another he's a brilliant opportunist and I wouldn't say Movistar are "playing to his ego". I would think that perhaps it was a plan to try and put Roglic under a bit of unexpected pressure. At the end of the day, having two men right up there in GC is not a bad thing.

wow Koronin ... that was alot of hate towards Quintana ( love for Valverde ) 🤣 ...
I gotta say ... i get more and more fond of this guy ... he is the new Contador in my eyes... making this sport really fun to watch ... quit a genius wen it comes to smell oportuneties, and a bit of an expert in windy conditions for a small guy 😁

Koronin [Koronin] Wednesday 11.Sep 23:41, 2019
Quintana proved he's selfish and can't handle the thought of working for a teammate. Guess Movistar had to play to Quintana's ego. Just so glad he's finally out of the team at the end of the season even though it's about 4 years too long. There's no telling how much he's cost Valverde over the past couple of years.

Roglic will join him and bring some mountain domestiques with him - problem solved.

Marek_c [Passionforbiking] Tuesday 10.Sep 08:35, 2019
Imagine if Visma did not crash at stage1.. Roglić would now be at least 5 min ahead of Valverde, and the Vuelta would probably be sealed at this point.
Also Pogacar probably did his life's biggest mistake signing contract with UAE until 2023. He should now forget the petrodolars, for a while, and find a good team. Otherwise he will end up like Aru, Martin or Kristoff. I'm afraid it is not that easy to see for a 20yo slovenian, who is flying now, and does not even see the need of a supportive team.

Koronin [Koronin] Tuesday 10.Sep 01:17, 2019
Nice to see Fuglsang get the stage win.

Valverde did a great job limiting his losses on a climb that is horrible for him. He gave back half the time he gained yesterday, so likely showing that time gain yesterday was very important. Also props to Soler for doing a fabulous job pacing Valverde.

Looking at the stage profiles left, I think stage 20 is the only stage in week 3 that Valverde really needs to worry about and do his best to not have a bad day.

Are we sure Soler didn't use more energy complaining?

The Hurricane will be here tomorrow evening/night and is supposed to be gone Friday afternoon. However, I'm headed inland tomorrow morning. My husband is currently renting an apt in a city inland where he's now working (it's going to take awhile to get me moved there), so I'm going there tomorrow. Hopefully will be back here this weekend. However, due to finances as my husband just moved there earlier this summer, we don't have internet net at his apartment. Fingers crossed I can get back here Saturday and we have power restored by then, otherwise I'm going to be really hoping that my current fantasy Vuelta riders, don't abandon the race on the rest day.

Hmmmm......I think I'd prefer to be answering the daily, "Who's the team leader at Movistar" question than dealing with this hurricane.

Quintana says he is tired of question about who is the leader for Movistar in Vuelta..
Well.. I guess we are all tired of never knowing that, and we only ask because we are used to the fact that all teams aiming for the GC, used to work together for a victory of a leader instead of spoiling most of the chances by letting the fate decide.
How should Mark Soler have known that he was supposed to wait for a leader, If you're all too tired to say who it is?

Just hoping the cold and rain don't end up making Valverde sick. It's fairly well known he hates cold and rain and after both yesterday's stage and today's he was shivering and had cold weather clothing on over his soaked kit after the stage and only spent a few minutes max talking to reporters giving basically 1 or 2 word answers before cutting the interviews short telling them he was freezing and going back tot he team bus to try to warm up.

UGH!!! Middle of la Vuelta and we have another hurricane headed for us this coming week. It's supposed to make a glancing blow (briefly make landfall) in the county north of where I live in North Carolina. Due to the speed it's moving it'll come through and be out in about a 24 hour time frame. Unlike the one last year it shouldn't cause much flooding (which is what caused most of the damage). Unfortunately we aren't fully recovered from last year's hurricane.

Koronin [Koronin] Sunday 1.Sep 03:56, 2019
One not from Valverde's win. His victory set the record for most number of years between first and most recent (or last) stage win in a Grand Tour. The record in both Giro and Tour is 15 years. Valverde's record in la Vuelta is now 16 years. When he won a stage last year he set the record for la Vuelta at 15 years and obviously broke that record with his win this year.

I know how I miscounted, I thought Lluis Mas and Roelandts were out of contract (obviously they are still under contract) and I forgot the two 2 Italians somehow. You're right they are better shape than I had thought. Basically they need 5 more riders if they expect Erviti to come back instead of retire. They could still go with young kids (which I would prefer) for those 5 spots.

Movistar is nearly full. They have 19 riders contracted for 2020. Not far to go.

Koronin [Koronin] Wednesday 28.Aug 07:19, 2019
His agent is the one that Movistar has just blacklisted and banned. (I thought blacklisted effectively was a ban, but the team specifically used both words).

It'll be interesting to see who Movistar now ends up filling their roster with. Currently they have 13 riders signed (Erviti has a contract offer but hasn't decided if he's retiring or not) for next season. They still need 12 riders to get to the minimum number required by the UCI. I don't think most of the kids on Valverde's U-23 and elite teams are ready for the WT yet. There are 2 that might be alright at the WT level and I think are ready for continental or Pro Conti, but don't think WT level yet.

DLC on his way to Cofidis instead of Movistar. Could well be related to the INEOS Vuelta starters incident and perhaps the fighting with Unzue.

seems vital important to make sure you have some changes left for last week of this game Aragonite ... i mean, the sprints are quit predictable .... i got top 5 today... 45 changes sounds like unlimited, compare to tv2 game with 25 only 😂 ... but with week 3 in mind, you better be careful

goon I always use the same username and team name. I'm lying 103rd in the purist, and 201st in the standard. Doesn't sound great but bare in mind I moved up 91 places in the former, and 321 places in the latter, after stage 3. ;) What positions are you in? Don't know if you know that you can check on rivals transfers, and team, by clicking on a team name, then clicking transfers, and the previous stage score number.

Nice win for Bennett.

Interesting story/news breaking in Spanish cycling media today. The agent that Trek and DQS blacklisted after the Sosa debacle is now blacklisted (and apparently banned) by Movistar. This also part of the reason Carapaz was removed from the Vuelta team and why a portion of current Movistar riders will not be resigned. This agent now appears to literally have only 2 WT teams who will deal with him and that is Ineos and Astana.

Koronin [Koronin] Saturday 24.Aug 18:25, 2019
Marek....it's 3 leaders and 5 helpers/stage hunters. Which they can just promote Marc Soler to leader and that solves the issue. More interesting is they replaced Carapaz with Rojas who is not a climber.

Partykjeppen [Il Piccolo Gregari] Saturday 24.Aug 15:31, 2019
He's not got much of a support team, but would hope Latour can end a horrible season on a high note with a stage win from the Vuelta.

Viktor86 [Le Tour de Brabant] Friday 23.Aug 06:29, 2019
Regarding Carapaz: it wasn't an (official) training that caused the issue (indeed bruises and such, no broken collarbone). He competed in a Dutch post Tour Criterium in a nearby town (Etten Leur), one of the latest in the line, and crashed during the ride with the injury as a result. The results of these kind of post Tour criteriums here are fixed upfront, so technically not a race.

According to Spanish (El Periodico) and regional media here (BN/DeStem) he took part in it without his team knowing of his plans. Let alone giving consent.

Hi goon. You have just reminded me that I haven't entered a team for the Roadcc comp. yet. :) It's the best format of fantasy on the net imo, shame the people running it aren't up to scratch. Haven't looked at it yet obviously, but there is normally a bargain or two to be had. One tip I would give is to pay attention to the points given for the young riders, KOM, and points jersey's. Don't know if you are playing the Purist game also (might as well :), if so Sam Bennett and Miguel Angel Lopez look to be must have's.
Look forward to seeing how you get on. I have to be hot favourite to beat you given my experience playing it, but tell that to Remco Evenepoel. :)
