Tour de France comments [newest on top]

Andy [Luxembourg Finest] Monday 15.Jul 17:01, 2019
Pinot group made a big mistake when they went too hard in the small hill. It was a gamble, either they made it there or they would more. Will be at least a minute and 30 sec at finish line now

Uran ... all in trouble in the wind ... I was commenting what a boring stage this was an hour ago 🤣

The final climb should be too hard for Edvald, so I don't have any expectations to him here, but would be great to get wrong about that.

interesting stage for Norwegians today ... Edvald v Stuyven, Naesen, Impey and Benoot in first hand ... Tony Martin can do something in the end here also ...
last time Edvald was in a breakaway that we knew would hold, i was 100% sure he would win it... but this time... tough guys who knows how to win here... this is gonna be difficult Edvald ...

Todays stage has to be up there with Amstel as race of the season. De Gendt was unbelievable.

Koronin [Koronin] Friday 12.Jul 00:41, 2019
All Movistar likely did today was not encourage their riders to continue to work for their two leaders. At least Landa tried something and didn't really lose any time when it didn't work. Hopefully Movistar lets Valverde go stage hunting later in the race because all he did today was waste energy. The best thing that can happen for Movistar going forward is to NOT resign Quintana. They really need to consider doing an almost total rebuild of that team.
Looks like Fuglsang should be mostly healed from his injuries.

He really was Aragonite...
What a first week stage we got today ... worst thing ever as i can remember in le tour at least...
A COUPLE of questions will be answered today 🤣 ...
Will Alaphilippe do like Van Avermaet did last year, and defend by joining the breakaway ... I think so ... maybe not necessarily for keeping yellow, but for Polka..
Will Wellens join the break ? ( he didn't look particularly well yesterday )
Will Barguil challenge Alaphilippe as KOM ?
Will Bernal open up gaps today already if he feels capable of it ?
Who's in yellow after today ? Kruijswijk ? Alaphilippe ? Bernal ... maybe Thomas?
What shape are Adam Yates in ? ... this stage got his name written all over it ...
And what about Fuglsang... actually .. I am not worried about him at this stage of the tour .. and his knee seems okey ...
Anything i forgot guys ? 😂
Oh Yes ... Nibali ... interesting man to watch today... and finally who's NOT a GC guy after today ... Porte ? Nibali ? maybe even Thomas, ( think not though ) to mention some huge names ....

EBH man of the match today. :)

Viktor86 [Le Tour de Brabant] Wednesday 10.Jul 03:38, 2019
I am more than happy with my option to watch the Tour via the Flemish-Belgian Sporza public broadcaster, still in my native Dutch language. Their duo Wuyts/De Cauwer is the best combination I can receive and I know I am not the only one in the Low Countries. The Dutch NOS has Dijkstra/Ducrot, mediocre at best. Don't seem to know anything about the sport and only care for their stupid castles instead of the race.

Dutch Eurosport is just plain terrible, for decades now. Amongst their current commentators are Traksel and Kroon. Despite I have the English voice over setting (which is nice), I get Dutch all the time. Traksel speaks with that of a thick accent and dialect a normal Dutchman can't even follow one sentence he speaks. Kroon is just annoying as hell, pretending he wasn't the King of the Chasse Patate, but some world class cyclist of the level Sagan with all his almost wins. Plus, at ES don't even know basic sh*t (like being surprised Landa can't do a normal ITT) and it looks like they have never seen a bike race before. Like ever.

Koronin [Koronin] Wednesday 10.Jul 01:29, 2019
Aragonite, many of us over here would take Kirby in a heartbeat over what we currently have. He's a huge improvement as sad as that may be.

Aragonite [TORA TORA TORA] Tuesday 9.Jul 23:59, 2019
28th FC-manager overall
Have to say I was more than happy when Phil Ligget disappeared from the UK's commentary teams. If the other guy is as bad, hit the mute button, that's what I do when I can no longer put up with Carlton Kirby's drivel.

Koronin [Koronin] Tuesday 9.Jul 22:16, 2019
LosBrolin, NBC's commentators are not helping. Phil Ligget and Bob Roll are horrible at broadcasting races and both get my nevers after less than 5 minutes of listening to them. Most of the time who knows what they are even talking. Maybe if NBC would just pay Eurosport and give us their feed it would be better.

goon1221 [Jinx.inc] Tuesday 9.Jul 10:20, 2019

Who else to put on top Marek? ... I had 3 options given " trust " ... Bernal as ( probably ) the best climber in the race ..
Sagan... well, no need explaining
Alaphilippe ... same same 🤣

Pre race, i as probity everybody else, had no idea who's the clear favourite this year ... but the fact that this year's course have this quality of altitude 2000 m +, I figure there's where this GC will be fought.... and when a bike race fight is held on 2000 m +, i figure, who's better suited than the guys born up there 😂
I seriously considered Uran on my team as well ... but then i had to drop some other point picker i trust .... and on this year's start list, it was easyer to trust some sprinters ...

Yesterday's stage was no indication of anything other than some observations of teams and riders with motivation to stay out of trouble in the hectic final ... like Ineos, Astana and Movistar with no intentions of winning the stage ... some rider had some small problems underway there, like Thomas, but this is things we see all the time early in GT's....

Ahead it's a quit interesting day Thursday ... a typical " loose the race stage "
meanwhile we can enjoy a most likely flat mass sprint today, and a lumpy reduced sprint/ breakaway/ late attack stage tomorrow 😂 .... this is still fun Koronin 🤩

Marek_c [Passionforbiking] Tuesday 9.Jul 09:26, 2019
Bernal assigned 5s gap to Thomas, and the whole world goes bananas :) Also surprised how many chose Bernal as captain, given the loyality in Skyneos, and the fact he won Suisse against all time weak field when it comes to climbing ability. On the other hand he also beat Quintana, Bardet and Yates at Paris Nice, so let's hope I'm as wrong about him as I was about Carapaz :))

According to Mr Unzue, Valverde, and Landa their TTT was about what they expected and aren't exactly unhappy with it. Something about they are a team for the mountains and were never going to be good on a stage like today's.

No need for Lotto-Visma to sign Kittel, just #FreeTeunissen. Proper class act. I have him on most seasonlong games I participating in, shame he was too expensive to steal in dynasty fantasy.

Koronin [Koronin] Saturday 6.Jul 21:36, 2019
Well at least 3 of my 4 sprinters got points today. Please win the TTT tomorrow EF and put Uran in yellow. That would be very helpful. Made a last minute switch taking Fuglsang off my team and replacing him with Uran. So far appears to be the correct choice. Hopefully Groenewegen didn't get hurt badly as he's my sprinter than didn't score points today. Not the best of starts for my team, but not the worst either.

Cav has failed to deliver any results this year, so he would not be on my team for Le Tour. The story here is how they handle it internal and also their recruitment strategy which is not even close to good enough for a WT team.

He certainly has something to prove in the next race he runs with a sprint finish. I wouldn't bet against him given the circumstances.

Partykjeppen [Il Piccolo Gregari] Saturday 6.Jul 16:04, 2019
Don’t think there’s anywhere to go for Cav now either - emotional farewell at World’s I reckon.

Nizzolo might get you a top five, but no way does he win a stage. I'd rather go with Cav, with what has been said.

Partykjeppen [Il Piccolo Gregari] Saturday 6.Jul 15:50, 2019
He would say that regardless I reckon. Nothing in past few weeks of racing to suggest anything but perhaps a few top 10s on the easiest stages. Good letting Nizzolo have a pubt

Aragonite [TORA TORA TORA] Saturday 6.Jul 15:47, 2019

Because Cav says he was peaking at the right time. Because Cav doesn;t generally lie about his condition. Because the team performance director say's he is in better shape than 2016, when he won won four stages. And finally because he has won thirty stages of the race.

Partykjeppen [Il Piccolo Gregari] Saturday 6.Jul 15:40, 2019
Don’t think it’s controversial from a sporting point of view, more that their one star rider hasn’t performed during his time at the team at all and is a lost cause. Wonder what they’ll do for 2020.

Erythropoietin [Erythropoietin] Saturday 6.Jul 14:58, 2019

Aragonite [TORA TORA TORA] Saturday 6.Jul 13:44, 2019

Ditched Eurosport in favour of ITV4's coverage of the race. I have heard of every rider in the Tour, that is until Rob Hatch let's rip with his 'correct pronunciation' of each rider. If only he knew as much about professional RR'ing as he did about language.

Partykjeppen [Il Piccolo Gregari] Saturday 6.Jul 13:20, 2019
I'm applying the "dress for the job you want, not the job you have"-principle to my selection for this Tour. After a handful of years where Sky have suffocated the race to the extend where the top spot really hasn't been in play in the final stretches of the race, I'm hoping this will be different.

This is the year where dual leadership will come crashing down on Ineos - at some point in the last stages Bernal will be forced to follow an early attack and leave Thomas behind. It would be great if an audacious attacker like Pinot, Landa or Kruijswijk would be able to pull of a GT-win in that manner. I've got the Izoard down as the mountain to go on.

Andy [Luxembourg Finest] Thursday 4.Jul 22:53, 2019
I was about to say Greipel, but maybe he has one top 20 in himself the first week. As he has admitted himself he has lost the instinct about sprinting in addition to very weak lead-out and the fact that he is not as fast as he once was.

Marek_c [Passionforbiking] Wednesday 3.Jul 10:05, 2019
Honestly, the TV2 managers sucks. Always did. They take away the funniest part of understanding the field and strategy, by putting riders in categories. You can't choose Bernal as captain because he is "young rider". You can't pick the best domestique - Kwiato as a domestique because he is "TT", You can't pick De Gent nor Barguil as a climber..etc. The values of riders and budget remain the same the whole game, ..and it also shows how many players picked each rider. Nonsense.

Valverde is insisting he is not racing for GC, however, he does want to go stage hunting. He was asked something about Landa and Quintana and basically said they are professionals they should be able to get along, however if not, I'll be there and I'll step in if I have to.

Got you 500pts more than Froome got me, and cost half as much. :)

Good that Porte doesn't know how satisfied I am with him due to the now-called dynasty fantasy and how many points I have lost there because of him ;)

Perhaps I will have him at 150. :)

Having said that, he is probably the best ITT/climber never to win a GT in recent years.

He probably needs stabilisers on his bike, to make it to the finish line. :)

Movistar announced their Tour line up. Interesting that they left Anacona off the list. Quintana had specifically asked for Anacona and Carapaz. Well we all know Carapaz very publically said "I'm not going to the Tour. I'm celebrating this Giro win." However, the choice to leave Anacona off is interesting as Anacona is Quintana's main training partner and they are good friends. Are we reading more into this than is actually there or not?

That Katusha team is quite frankly awful.

Andy [Luxembourg Finest] Friday 28.Jun 10:02, 2019
Both Yates on Mitchelton team, team says Adam captain, so no Vuelta for Simon then probably. That was a surprise for me.

Marek_c [Passionforbiking] Friday 28.Jun 09:08, 2019
Just looking on the teams, as they now are being announced.. looks like it may be really interesting TdF, giving absence of Froome and no sole favourite. Nobody will "watch out for that one guy". Also more teams put more than one captain, and/or their objectives aren't that easy to read. DQT is one of them, but also INS, UAD, TBM.

Koronin [Koronin] Thursday 27.Jun 17:43, 2019
As a side note, Movistar and Valverde just announced he has signed a new 2 year contract to keep racing through 2021. He also signed an addition to that contract that keeps him with the team through 2024 in some capacity AND he stated that he is not saying he's retiring in 2021. He won't go that far and wants to leave the door open to racing longer IF he wants to. The team it's self is just happy to have him signed through 2024 to do something.

johnjackjoe [JohnJackJoe Racing] Thursday 27.Jun 12:10, 2019
I guess that's the confirmation he's gonna leave QS after this year.

Looking deeper, he has won five stages of the Vuelta, which blows the hot weather theory out of the water. :) But there could be something he doesn't get on with re Le Tour as he also missed 2014 - 2016.

Aragonite [TORA TORA TORA] Wednesday 26.Jun 12:43, 2019

Considering Gilbert's career I find it very surprising that he has only ever won one stage of Le Tour. Perhaps him and hot weather don't get on that well?

bminchow [Man Chow] Monday 24.Jun 15:31, 2019
I really am curious about jacob. Can he continue that form all the way through? I'd love to see it. The first TdF I ever watched was when Riis won (I know). Maybe time for another Dane? Plus he seems like a good guy. Movistar? I wouldn't give up on Nairo. Some guys are only focused on the TdF and I would guess that he is ready for it. And I think Valverde helps.

Koronin [Koronin] Sunday 23.Jun 00:37, 2019
Movistar will again be an interesting story and possibly for the wrong reasons yet again. We've got Landa coming off the Giro where he was riding very well. Quintana going in looking poor. Valverde looking like he's reset and looking more like himself and still the best time trialist of the 3 yet he's also 39 years old.

Andy [Luxembourg Finest] Thursday 20.Jun 19:07, 2019
Could be, and the winner of TdF has spent one week of June in Dauphine each year since Lance did Suisse back 01. Official results may disagree about 2010 though :)

Koronin [Koronin] Sunday 28.Oct 01:57, 2018
Viktor86, From the rest of your comments, I think your right. Basically he's said before (and I think in this interview as well) something along the lines of: As long as I'm winning and having fun I'm going to keep racing. I showed this year I can still win and can still race at a high level. He also made an interesting comment about his training. He said there are a lot of good riders, but they have to train 6 or 7 hours a day. I've never had to train more than about 4 hours a day at most. I have a natural talent. The comment that he doesn't have to train more than 4 hours a day while so many others are training at least 6 hours a day I found to be interesting. There are times he'll do 1-2 hour training rides.

Viktor86 [Le Tour de Brabant] Saturday 27.Oct 19:46, 2018
For Valverde it all relies if he can still win proper races in 2020.

Koronin [Koronin] Saturday 27.Oct 06:38, 2018
Movistar ended their team meetings today. Although there is nothing set currently, it appears they will be sending Landa and Valverde to the Giro, Landa and Quintana to the Tour, and Valverde and Quintana to the Vuelta. (Other interesting note is that Valverde said he plans on racing longer than just through 2020. So the thought that he would retire either after the Olympics or at the end of 2020 are incorrect as he said today he's not retiring after the 2020 season he'll be racing longer.)

Now with Movistar sending 2 instead of 3 leaders to the Tour that might help a bit.

Viktor86 [Le Tour de Brabant] Saturday 27.Oct 01:11, 2018
If they want Bardet to win the Tour, the ASO not only would have to exclude that TTT, but also limit the ITT to less than 10 km on a hilly or mountainous profile. Unlike Pintot with a bit of solo riding talent, Bardet is an anti time trial guy and the French teams are traditionally weak in the TTT. They have less culture with it than others.

Maybe prohibitions of wattometers will do it ? ... I hear some roumers about that

boris03 [Cycling lions] Friday 26.Oct 20:05, 2018
Noone really has strength to crack their mountain train but this year Roglic and Dumoulin showed they can defend theirselves in fight with their train on climbs that are less than 2000 m high. Both of them are capable of challenging their A-squad with decent amount of TT kilometers on the menu.
If they want Bardet to win certainly they should exclude TTT from the race.

LosBrolin [JuhaMieto] Friday 26.Oct 12:29, 2018

SKY being the jersey holders will send their A-squad here every year and I see that is the biggest problem for other contenders. Route will of course play a factor but first you'd need to crack their mountain train.

Andy [Luxembourg Finest] Friday 26.Oct 12:25, 2018

LosBrolin [JuhaMieto] Friday 26.Oct 12:22, 2018

What exactly would be the "correct" route for Tour then, skipping the time trials completely?

boris03 [Cycling lions] Friday 26.Oct 10:57, 2018
The only reasonable thing Tom Dumoulin can do now, in my opinion, is to target Giro-Vuelta double and give everything to win both of them and show Prudhomme that Tour will with routes like this be Froome show where he easily beats Quintana and Bardet because they can't be worse on TT and TTT.

Koronin [Koronin] Friday 26.Oct 03:04, 2018
The route could be better, but it could also be a lot worse.

I (and many of Valverde's fans) are really hoping that this route being very bad for him will help keep the team and sponsors from wanting to make him race it.
